Modern Insta Bee - October (catch-up post)

For October, Gemma asked us to make the Triple Star in fabric which she kindly sent us. As before, the pattern can be found in the book  "Modern Bee - 13 quilts to make with friends", by Lindsay Conner.

This being a new block for me, I made a test block in red, blue and white. The "Dear Nina" block collection is slowly growing...


The centre star has points which are only 1"x1" finished!!! Rather fiddly, but once past this stage the block is actually very fast to sew together.

The final block for Gemma looks like this (apologies for the atrociously bad quality of the photos!):

All right then, judging by these, I'm just going to have to get a hold of Lindsey's book after all! I resisted the bee, but those blocks look really good!

If you look on Instagram you can find even more photos of the various blocks. Main hashtag is moderninstabee2014. There are also specific ones for the UK and Australia, but the main one should give you a good idea.

The work with the pall for the Swedish Church in London is progressing, slowly. I published a photo of the middle section, the road, in October ( click for entry ). At the moment we are working on the four areas around the road, each representing a season. As everything is hand sewn it is a rather slow process, but great fun! Our latest thinking is that we should try to focus the summer season on blue, yellow and red to make sure they all match each other. Some of the "flowers" in the picture above has therefore been moved to other seasons or been put in the "perhaps" pile. A rough count in the photos shows that we have stitched together a little over 500 hexagons, plus the road; someone mentioned that we probably need around 2000...
